Week 2 Recap: Bills Outlast Lions in a 72-Point Thriller as Panthers Flatten Falcons

Written by a language model from the week’s box scores.

The story of Week 2 was in Buffalo, where the Bills held off Detroit 41-31 in the highest-scoring game of the slate at 72 combined points. Josh Allen was efficient, going 20 of 31 for 248 yards and three touchdowns. The engine, though, was James Cook III, who ground out 135 yards and a score on 21 carries. Dalton Kincaid chipped in 7 catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. Detroit's passing attack did everything it could. Jared Goff threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns on 26 of 38, and Amon-Ra St. Brown torched the secondary for 9 catches, 142 yards and two scores. Jahmyr Gibbs was held to 52 yards on 16 carries, so Detroit's offense ran almost entirely through the air.

The blowout belonged to Carolina, which went into Atlanta and won 34-3, the week's biggest margin at 31 points. Bryce Young was sharp, completing 23 of 36 for 287 yards and three touchdowns. Rookie-to-watch Tetairoa McMillan turned five catches into 101 yards. Chuba Hubbard added 53 yards on 12 carries. Atlanta's passing game never got going. Cooper Rush finished 10 of 17 for 86 yards with two interceptions. Bijan Robinson managed 72 yards on 16 carries, and Drake London caught four balls for 51 yards.

The nailbiter came at MetLife, where Green Bay escaped the Jets 20-17. Kansas City's 33-30 win over Indianapolis matched that three-point margin. Jordan Love's line was modest at 16 of 29 for 145 yards, but he threw two touchdowns. Matthew Golden led the Packers in receiving with 58 yards on four grabs, and Kaleb Johnson paced Green Bay's ground game with 32 yards on 8 carries. On the other side, Geno Smith threw it 41 times for 247 yards and a touchdown. Breece Hall was stuffed on the ground with 29 yards on 16 carries but salvaged his day with 5 catches for 63 yards.

Elsewhere, defenses dominated much of the slate. Minnesota beat Chicago 9-3, New England held Pittsburgh to a field goal in a 20-3 win, and Cincinnati kept Houston out of the end zone in a 20-6 victory. Lopsided wins also came from Seattle (31-7 at Arizona), San Francisco (35-13 over Miami) and the Rams (28-6 over the Giants). Dallas put up 37 in a 37-20 win over Washington.

For fantasy managers, the takeaways are clear. Cook's 21-carry workload makes him a locked-in RB1 play, and Kincaid's touchdown-backed 95 yards is the kind of usage worth chasing at tight end. St. Brown and Goff remain elite stacks when Detroit is forced to throw. McMillan's 100-yard day alongside a three-touchdown Young suggests the Carolina passing game deserves DFS attention. Hall's receiving work keeps his floor alive even when the run game stalls. Robinson and London owners should temper expectations if Atlanta's quarterback play stays this limited.
