Week 7 Recap: Bucky Irving Bulldozes Carolina as Defenses and Ground Games Rule Week 7

Written by a language model from the week’s box scores.

The loudest statement of the week came from Seattle, where the Seahawks held Kansas City to a lone field goal in a 20-3 win. Cincinnati went into Baltimore and left with a 35-13 rout, and the low-scoring theme ran through the slate: Pittsburgh edged New Orleans 16-10, Minnesota beat Indianapolis by the same score, and Detroit outlasted Green Bay 20-17. If you rostered defenses this week, you probably liked your Sunday.

The blowout belonged to Tampa Bay, which flattened Carolina 43-13 on the road. Bucky Irving did the heavy lifting with 106 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, a true workhorse share. Baker Mayfield threw only 11 times, going 7 of 11 for 64 yards and a touchdown to Tez Johnson. The Bucs simply didn't need the air attack. For Carolina, Bryce Young finished 14 of 27 for 163 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, and Chuba Hubbard managed just 33 yards on seven carries. Darren Waller's lone catch went for a 50-yard score, which is a nice box-score line but not a dependable weekly role.

The nailbiter was Cleveland's 27-24 win at Tennessee, and it was a fantasy bonanza in both backfields. Tony Pollard ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries for the Titans, and he still lost. Quinshon Judkins answered with 96 yards and two scores on 17 carries for the Browns. Deshaun Watson threw for 308 yards on 25 of 36 passing with an interception, and KC Concepcion was the big beneficiary with eight catches for 129 yards. Cam Ward went 20 of 31 for 181 yards and a pick, while Carnell Tate led Tennessee with five grabs for 69 yards.

Dallas won the shootout 38-21 in Philadelphia, which was the highest-scoring game of the week at 59 combined points. Javonte Williams ran wild for 155 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Dak Prescott was efficient, going 15 of 27 for 212 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to CeeDee Lamb, who posted 74 yards on five catches. For the Eagles, Tanner McKee threw for 211 yards on 23 of 35 with a touchdown and an interception. Makai Lemon caught seven balls for 67 yards and a score. Saquon Barkley averaged nearly nine yards a carry but got only seven totes for 62 yards and a touchdown as the game script got away from Philly.

The fantasy takeaway is that volume backs are winning. Irving, Pollard and Williams each handled 24 or more carries, and all three should be locked into lineups and considered as DFS cornerstones when their price tags allow. Judkins is earning RB2 consideration with his scoring role. Concepcion's eight catches on a 300-yard Watson day are worth chasing on waivers, and Lemon's seven grabs suggest steady PPR volume in Philadelphia. Don't overreact to Waller's long touchdown or to Mayfield's quiet 64-yard line in a game Tampa controlled from the ground.
